About Phalenes
Phalenes are the down or drop eared variety of the breed known as Papillon in the USA. All aspects of the Phalene dog --coat, color, markings, size, temperament-- are the same as the standard for the Papillon. The only difference is the ears of phalenes. In other countries, the Phalene is registered and shown as a separate breed from the Papillon. Phalenes have ears that are mobile and they can lift the ear at the base, but the ear should maintain it's dropped position. Just as the ears of Papillon puppies can go up and down until they are almost 4 to 5 months old, the ears of a Phalene puppy may not settle down until 5 months old. Ears can change after that time, but this is rare. Both up and down ears can be produced in the same litter of either Papillon or Phalene puppies, although the down eared Phalenes are usually quite rare. Phalenes are actually the original type of the Papillon breed. Over the years , the up ears of the Papillon became most popular. Phalenes almost became extinct. Some of the best Phalenes have been preserved by some long-time Phalene breeders, especially overseas in Sweden and France. The Phalene variety of the Papillon is seeing a resurgence in popularity in the USA. However, when showing Phalenes, a breeder has to be patient, as many judges are not familiar with the drop ears.
