Colors of Pixiedust Papillons dogs puppies
Sometimes when a person is looking for papillon puppies for sale, they try to describe the color of the papillon puppy that they would like to own. And sometimes the potential buyer and papillon breeder do not fully understand each other. We hope this short description of papillons coat colors will help reduce misunderstandings. It is not meant as an in-depth description of Papillon color.
Tri colors--this means papillon
puppies that are white and black on the body, with black on the face. On
the face are brown spots above each eye and on the cheeks. This is a classic tri
and what most Papillon breeders think of then a buyer says they want
a Papillon puppy that is tri-colored. Many times at birth the brown
spots do not show and it takes some time for them to develop.

Hound tri-- this color is a
Papillon puppy that is again white and black on the body, but the
head is mostly brown. See the picture of AKC Champion papillon Deusjuvat Chief
at Pixiedust (sire of Merit) and AKC papillon Blairwynn's She Loves Me
Not, to see how a hound tri looks. Many Hound tris look black and white at
birth, and as puppies may have a smutty look. It takes some time and maturity
for the color to develop.

Sable--this is a Papillon puppy that is some shade of brown, red or yellow with black hairs on the
tips of the ears and sometimes a mask on the face. AKC papillons Pixiedust 21
Gun Salute and Pepejas Twilight TIme (sire of Merit) are examples of this color. Red sable papillon or
phalene puppies can look almost black and white or tri color when they are born.
The red color develops as the papillon puppies mature, becoming more pronounced by 6 to
nine months old. These are pictures of sables.

Black and white--most Papillon breeders or buyers have a full understanding of this color.
And what about a solid head? These are beautiful too.

Face markings on a new puppy can change quite a bit from birth to 4-6 months old. A very narrow blaze at birth may disapper and become a solid head. A full narrow blaze at birth may close over the nose and become a noseband and a star or strip.
