Pixiedust Papillons and Phalenes

This page is full of examples of the reasons breeders are becoming less open to visitors. The "inspect the home or kennel before you buy" statement is less important to breeders as safety becomes the number one reason buyers are not welcome to visit breeders. We received permission to print the responses from breeders about their experiences with potential buyers.

An example: i had a couple, who purchased a puppy 3 years ago (we haven't had puppies in that long) from me, show up out of the blue several times and the latest was yesterday. These people are the type that once you get to know them they think they can come and go as they please and they are hard to get rid of once they come around. Anyways, We were gone and were pulling in our drive way when they were driving by our house. This was right in the middle of a mini crisis and we were in a rush to get back to the hospital, etc. Not to mention "Somehow" my 29 year old horse, that I've had since I was 8 years old, was out loose, grazing in my yard. I was very disturbed by this because I have elephant ears and cannas planted in a certain part of the yard where no animals should be and that is where my horse was and Elephant ears are DEADLY to horses. I was in a whirl wind trying to figure out how her latch and snap "magically" came off her barn gate and then on top of that that she just so happened to get another gate opened from the field and walk into my yard with the gate closed behind her. Hummm...
Anyways, I was worried to death about getting the vet to check her to make sure she was alright.
But here are these people just driving by and trying to get into my private property while I am gone. Then here they just hop out screaming and pushing their way in my gates, etc.
The other two times we always allowed them to come in because we were not busy at that time. Once they even brought their dogs and wanted full access and run of my yard, etc. I tried to be nice and did explain in detail for them NOT to show up unannounced without calling and making an appointment. I went into great detail why.
It is my policy that I have always asked people to call first to make sure we are home and that we are not busy or doing anything. This includes family, friends or other.

At any rate, I went off on them and was especially PO'd when I found out that they stopped at my neighbors asked if I were home or not because they couldn't get into my front gate (locked with security cameras for safety from thieves) and asked if they could come up to my house while I was gone. They wanted to pet the dogs and horses and let their dog visit .
The neighbor was disturbed by this and so was I when I found out.
Any "normal" person would of not showed up announced first of all, but when they saw no one was home then they would of left and not tried to break and enter someone's property.
So, they got out yelling "hey, what you doing. We were in the area and wanted to let Hooch visit again" and going on and on. They came up to my entrance gate (different from the other gate) and just opened it and came barging right in like they owned the place. They know I have dogs that bite and here they came anyways.
I tried running up and showing them back out but they kept coming in and talking. I tried to be nice and just say "I don't have the time for this right now, we just got here and have to leave after we make sure the horse is alright."
They didn't  listen or care and kept coming in with their dogs and wanting into my house to talk. I was so upset already with just a bad day going on and then this. So, I broke red on them and told them I didn't mean to be rude but I didn't have time to talk to them then and I thought it was VERY rude of them to just show up without calling ahead of time to make sure we were there and not busy. I pointed out this is the 3rd time this happened with them and each time I told them to call first. I also told them I didn't appreciate people barging into MY home and trying to trespass without permission and to leave immediately!

I make sure to let potential buyer know to call ahead to let me know when they want to came to make sure I am home and I still have the pups they are looking for. You would think it would be a common sense to call ahead before making the 1-2 hour drive, but it never stopped to amaze me how many people just show up and then get upset with me that they came all this way and I “wasn’t” home or no longer have what they came for.

What ticks me off the most is when some idiots jump the fence or force the gates open so they can come in to my property to personally knock on my door, even thou they can ring bell that is loud enough for them to hear all the way at the gate.

It is people like these that caused me to have my property set up like Fort Knox. With security cameras, motion detectors, two locked gates between my house and the outside fence, and “NO TRASPASSING” and “BEWARE OF DOG” signs everywhere, not to mention a loaded shotgun by the door.

After all that it was a good experience since it shows me what to look forward to if I do become a breeder. I also get nervous since I have had a friend that has been held at gun point and had all her puppies taken and some valuable just from letting someone in her house to look at her pups. I was just talking about this yesterday, if I breed if I should not let people in my house. My friend and I both live in great neighborhoods, it's just you get all walks of life when you place a ad in the paper.

If someone wants to just pet and play with dogs and pups I'm sure there are MANY shelters that would love their help with walking etc. Nobody gets my address unless I feel they will make a good home for my pups and it's worth my time. I guess the only advice I have is to not give your address unless you feel comfortable that your pups or rescues would be a good match for the interested parties, and ask that they cancel if they can't make it so you can go on with your day and not wait around for them to show up. You are not a public store that has business hours, this is your home.

I said no they are not for sale either look at the puppies for sale or leave. My dogs are not for you entertainment. The lady was mad and at that point I did not care since she was so rude and just walked through my house without even asking! On her way out she heard my japanese chins scratching at the door to get into the living room. She goes oh what is behind here and just opens the door and lets my two japanese chins out they are going crazy running everywhere they love people. I am worried about the puppies getting trampled. Then they just pick the dogs up my chins and start bouncing them around. I told them to leave, but they did not leave right away. They told me not until they were done playing. I had no idea what to do. If I would've let my gsd in he would've cause a major problem and it was just a daughter and her mom. I thank god she left. I was so mad after that. I did not help my friend with her pups after that. I don't even know what I will do when I have mine! I say out of 10 people I let look at the dogs 6 were crazies.

What about the people that live alone? Like my friend not married and all? Just having them wait outside and not come in the house is that bad? Does that make you shady? I mean she wants to protect herself and be outside where other neighbors and  can see that you are ok?

What a world we live in!

I had a man and woman couple come to the house to visit a kitten that I had up for sale. These were not your every day kitten purchasers. These were people who showed and had a fairly recognizable cattery in the fancy. I did meet them at a show once and did witness that they were a bit pushy to another exhibitor, but I never thought too much about it and went on. It was a show kitten I had for sale, one of the most drop dead beautiful black females I've seen and was just dripping in coat. I was going to keep her and show her myself but I didn't have the time to campaign 3 kittens and need the extra money to show the 2 I was keeping for my breeding program. So, I put her up for sale as a show kitten.
These people were one of the first people who emailed about her and they would show her. After talking with them several times in emails and via the phone, I thought great. Well, they drove 8 hours to get here.
Luckily I had my husband here, along with my dad, who were outside working on my yard pond.

They came in sat down and I got coffee, etc. They were looking at Bella and her parents and the other kittens in the litter who were running around playing. I did get an uneasy feeling from them and felt like they thought they were better than me. They basically took over the conversation and treated me like I knew nothing in a round about way.
In the beginning, I told them that if they were not interested in the kitten that I had people waiting in line behind them for her and I needed to know one way or the other. After meeting them, I became uneasy about offering the kitten to them.
Especially after they made snide comments about my personal choice in home decorations and decor color. (made me mad that they were rude enough to put it down and say it isn't anything they would have in their "home.".)
They made several smart mouth comments like that.

I kept noticing they were always handling the 2 kittens I was going to keep. The woman asked at least 2 times if I would sell one of them to her and I plainly said NO each time. I did explain why not as not to come across rude.

Conversations went on for a bit and The last straw was when she laid $1500. cash down on my table and said she'd take my calico (the one I was keeping). I was so upset that I told her that NONE of my kittens are for sale to her and to please leave. I started grabbing my cats to put them in another room and the phone rang. I went to the other side of the room to grab it and hurry and hung up and turned around and they were gone. The $1500. was still on the table, so I grabbed it and ran to catch them. They had already started outside with my calico kitten.
Luckily, my husband and dad were standing outside and my hubby knew I would never sale the calico so he stopped them.
I ran outside and grabbed my kitten, they were cursed out and told I would be taking their car tag # and calling the police for attempted theft. They left, but not before threating me.

I really never amazes me that people don't listen. And that they think their money can buy anything coming and going. I suppose they thought that if they can't buy it, they will just steal it and hang papers on it.

Hard lesson learned. I would never bring out anything other than what is available, unless I feel 100% comfortable and they just want to see the rest of the litter.

I would not have them back they sound like trouble you don't need. probably the type to be so stupid that they or an animal get hurt and then try and sue you. You don't need people like that around. no common sense or manners I have no patience for people like that.

The pregnant woman with a litter who was killed and her baby taken.. made some people take note of what they posted where regarding dogs/ kennels and personal info. People can be super scary..

I'd take the most precautions necessary in showing litters/ unwanted guests in any of your situations too.

The biggest thing I let people know is that they are visitors! Me and my dogs live here and we aren't going to be made to feel uncomfortable. It usually works out really well.
